Why Micah?

In the fall of 2023, we set out across the RVA Metro area to ask the question "Why Micah?". Is our work still needed? If so, what would a renewed vision and practice look like? We listened deeply. What we heard contiues to guide our discovery of the sustainable future for the Micah Initiative, impacting the lives of RVA students and families and addressing the inequities in our school system.

Dr. Lauranett Lee

Chenel Hodges

CIS Coordinator, Bellevue Elementary

CIS (Communities In Schools) Coordinators are part social workers, part volunteer coordinators and serve a case load of students in the school they serve. Chenel profoundly reflects on the impact mentoring a student can make on both the mentor and mentee.

Del. Betsy Carr

Virginia House of Delegates

Del. Carr served on the School Board in Richmond from 2006 to 2009 before being elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in the 2009 General Election, Representing the 69th district, where she continues to serve today. In addition, she was one of the 4 founders of the Micah Initiative in the mid 1990's. Your faith community or organization can make a profound difference in the life of a struggling student.
